Carnlough
village itself is situated on the famous Antrim Coast Road,
a mere 12 miles north from Larne.
It boasts a magnificent backdrop in the form of Glencloy -
the second of the Nine Glens of Antrim known as the Glen of
the Hedges.
It is believed that the first settlers in Glencloy were primitive
hunters and fishermen who arrived in the valley around 6000BC.
These first residents of Carnlough were attracted to the area
by an abundance of flint which they used for tools and weapons.
The glen also provided a source of food such as deer, wild
pig etc and the nearby sea allowed the settlers to hunt for
fish.
The area around the modern village is scattered with numerous
sites of archeological significance and bears testimony to
the ancient history of the village and its people. Early visitors
to the area included the Vikings and the Normans.
The
picturesque village harbour has for many years been Carnlough’s
main focal point and is a key tourist attraction. The harbour
herself has undergone extensive refurbishment in recent times
under the Larne Borough Council.
There
are lots of walks and sites to be sampled around the area,
including the famous Cranny Water Falls, an incredible beauty
spot that is not to be missed by nature enthusiasts. Hill
walkers and ramblers will find a wealth of opportunity for
scenic walks in the hinterland of Carnlough. The Antrim Plateau
boasts a string of attractive lakes nestling on its heights.
Loughascraban, Loughisland, Loughfad, Loughfine, Loughnabrick,
Loughnatrosk, Cranny Lough, Loughnatullig and Loughnacally
are bordered by the Ulster Way as it leads to Glenariff.
Situated about two miles above the village on the Ballymena
line the Doonan picnic area provides breathtaking views of
Glencloy down to Carnlough Bay and the surrounding headlands,
providing an extremely attractive location for a family picnic
while back inside the village the Harbor House houses a community
resource centre with access to fax, photocopying and computer
facilities.
